These days with the prices of food going higher, more people are turning to starting their own gardens. It helps them save money and gives them something they can do in their spare time. Most people can remember helping their mom, grandma, or grandpa with their own gardens, and the tips they used to get the most from them. Today, those tips are still in use today and we will look at some of those.

One of the first things to remember is make your garden only as big as you have time for. Many times, people make big gardens and they do not produce what they want, as they cannot give it the proper time and dedication it needs. Choose the vegetables you want to grow carefully. Always remember that not everything grows well together. Make sure your garden gets enough water during its growing season, if you want a healthy and prosperous garden. Keeping your plants well hydrated will bring your a bountiful harvest when fall arrives.

Make a plan of action to battle the weeds that will be around from time to time. Yes, no matter how much you try weeds will become a problem. Setting a regular schedule to remove them is a good idea. Remember this is your garden, so have fun with it most of all. Give it attention and in a few months, you will be surprised at the results that you get. It will take some work on your part, but nothing beats homegrown vegetables.

There’s nothing like having a garden. It brings a feeling of peacefulness and serenity to its owners. Working in a garden indeed has its therapeutic effects.

This can be especially true for the elderly. Today, there have been much discussion about keeping youthful -looking and maintaining good health well into a person’s senior years, and one of the ways of doing it is by keeping busy in a garden.

It has been proven that by keeping the body active and moving, this allows the blood to freely flow throughout the body, which benefits a person health wise, and this is particularly true for the elderly. There are numerous recent studies that have been published in recent years that has shown that the best way to maintain good health and longevity is by staying active.

And working with a garden will definitely help toward that end. The constant physical exertion that gardening entails will indeed pay off in great dividends in the form of good health and a much longer life than those who do not stay active in their senior years.

In addition to constant gardening, being constantly exposed to the warm sunlight and good, clean air is bound to pay in better health and longer life. Just observe older persons who do such gardening nearly every day and see how healthful and youthful they appear.

Yes, keeping active is a very important factor in looking young and living longer. There are many constructive ways to do this, and one of the best ways is by keeping the elderly active with a garden of their own.

A beautiful indoor herb garden can look fantastic on your window sill and bring you fresh, aromatic herbs all year long. They are incredibly easy to grow and care for and come in several different varieties depending on what you are looking grow. If you are looking to enhance your cooling, culinary herb kits are available but there are a couple different varieties of these as well.

Culinary herbs are sometimes split into Italian herbs (parsley, cilantro, oregano, for example) or non Italian herb sets. As a group, culinary herbs can include parsley, thyme, cilantro, basil, dill, oregano, chives, savory, garlic or sage. These herbs will make a fantastic addition to any meal that you may have planned.

Some people like to grow herbs for medicinal purposes. Herbs have been used for years to help with basic malady’s and are an organic way to take care of some of your ailments verses relying on medications. Some of the herbs in a medicinal kit may include echinacea, angelica, mint, yarrow, chamomile, St. Johns wort, lemon balm, Valerian, or cayenne.

Herbs for tea’s are also another type of garden to grow on your window sill. Fresh herbs for tea can make for an incredibly aromatic and flavorful cup of tea. These herbs can include lemon balm, catnip, rosemary, mint, chamomile, lavender, and lemon grass. Whenever using herbs for tea or for medical reasons, be sure to do your research on the preparation as some may need additional steps while others do not.

Today’s supermarkets sell a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. However, these products are often grown on commercial farms and are treated with harsh pesticides and chemicals. Parents may feel unsure about buying these fruits and vegetables for their children. For this reason, many families today consider growing their own organic gardens.

In fact, the benefits of organic gardening include knowing that a family is consuming the healthiest produce available. People can control with what, if anything, they treat their garden. They may try non-chemical pest control, which can include planting hardy mums and other potent flowers on the garden’s edges to keep away raccoons, deer, and other animals. These fragrant flowers also draw spiders, flies, potato bugs, june bugs, and other pests away from the crops.

Garden growers also can be assured that they are picking and eating the fruit and vegetables from their gardens at the optimal time. Some stores sell outdated produce that should be disposed of rather than sold to the public. People have been known to get sick from eating fruits and vegetables that are past their prime. When they grow their own organic produce, growers can monitor daily their crops and pick them when they are at their peak ripeness. They can then enjoy a flavorful and healthy treat with their meals.

Organic gardening also saves people money. Grocery store produce can sell for a hefty price when in fact people can often grow these products for much cheaper than they could buy them.

The various types of gardening tools available are far beyond the scope of one simple article to cover, but most basic gardening needs can be met with a few simple tools. Safety is the first area that should be covered, and various tools and supplies can be acquired to aid in this endeavor. Dirt churning and moving equipment are also needed, as well as watering and pruning tools.

Safety Gardening Tools

The first aspect of any task, whether interior or exterior, is safety, and gardening is no exception. Thick leather gloves need to be purchased to prevent damage to the hands when accomplishing labor intensive tasks, and basic rubber gloves need to be used for more simple jobs. Eye goggles should also be on hand in case heavy digging or cutting is required, and ear plugs when power equipment is used.

Dirt Churning and Moving Gardening Tools

The second aspect of gardening tools that need to be addressed are basic dirt churning and moving tools. Shovels and picks of all sizes are commonly used gardening requirements, and in big jobs power equipment may need to be purchased or rented in order to effectively create and maintain the garden. The size of the garden, and the experience of the gardening, will be the deciding factor of whether hand or power equipment is used.

Watering and Pruning Gardening Tools

The final gardening tools that need to be on hand are ones used for watering and pruning. If the garden contains small items, such as flowers, then simple hand trimmers will be adequate, otherwise larger cutters and trimmers will be required. Irrigation systems are also mandatory in order to plant and maintain a garden of any size, and this will once again depends upon the size of the garden and the ease of access to water and water pumping systems.

Container gardens can be so much fun for people of all ages, ranging from young children to even the elderly.

You can get creative with it depending on your time and the age group you are working with. Small children can get small pots and paint them different colors and things to make them their own, before placing the dirt and the seeds of whatever they want to grow in them. This can be done at home with your family or even in the classroom as a group project or even at your next birthday party instead of taking home goodie bags, they can take home their own pot of herbs that they planted and decorated. Children can learn a sense of responsibility, by learning that the plants need water every day to grow as well as sunlight.

If you live in an apartment or a retirement home or even a very small house with no yard, you can still have your own container garden. This is also a great way to cut corners with your budget instead of buying items that your dinner recipe calls for, you can grow them yourself and use them and feel a sense of accomplishment that you contributed something to the recipe that you grew yourself.

Another fun thing to do with items that you can grow in your container garden like Sage and things like that, is gifts like little pillows packed with the herbs that you can heat up in your microwave.

Vegetable plants need extra nutrients than what they can get from sunshine, soil, and water. They need extra nutrients to thrive and grow, turning your garden into the healthy food source you intend it to be.

These extra nutrients will need to come from a good garden fertilizer. You will need to fertilize your garden by first beginning with the fresh soil. Spread the fertilizer evenly over the soil. You can do this by using a simple hand spreader. Once the fertilizer is spread, turn the fertilizer over into the soil, using a hand spade, or a tiller, if you prefer.

Remember, it is possible to over fertilize. Over fertilizing may result in burning up the plants. Be sure you follow the directions given by the fertilizers manufacturer.
After finishing the fertilizing process, plant your vegetables. Water them, according to each vegetable plants instruction, and watch them grow.

However, there is a second process of fertilizing. This comes about midway of their growth.

The second process is totally different than the first. This time, you will not need to be turning over any soil. Instead, you will be making a trench row alongside the plants. You can do this by using a regular hoe. Once the trenchs are made, apply the fertilizer, using the same amount throughout the garden as in the beginning, into the trenchs. Cover the fertilizer with the trench soil. As you irrigate, or the rains come, the fertilizer will work its way into the plant roots.

As many of us like to have flowerbeds or gardens in our yards, a raised garden bed is one of the easiest and quite beautiful ways to do this. A raised garden is a garden that is simply placed in a wooden frame which you then place on your lawn. Before you decide whether a raised garden is the right thing for your garden, or flower bed it is important you know more about how a raised garden is created.

A raised garden will be easy to create and add a stunning dimension to your garden. This is something that any gardener can do for their garden. In order to make the raised garden you will need fresh soil, seeds that you plan on planting, as well as four pieces of wood cut in to the size that you would like your raised garden to be in.
After you have your piece of wood cut to the size you want your garden to be, you will need to dig about a two inch trench in the are you plan on putting the boards (raised garden). Once you have placed the wood in these trenches it is important to nail your raised garden together without any unlevel parts..

After your raised garden is put together you simply need to put in your clean soil and your seeds. To begin growing the raised garden you need to water the plants as you would any other garden. Continue to add fertilizer, mulch, or any other compost product that you would like to add to the grown of this raised garden.

Raised gardens also come in already built containers that can be found on carts to go inside your home. These are easier for those who would rather only plant a few plants inside of it at a time. No matter your gardening needs or experience, these raised gardens will bring a beauty to your garden or home.

Growing a garden in a raised garden bed allows people to grow an organic garden without having to worry about soil contaminants and a host of pests, including beetle grub and slugs. Building a bed for one’s garden takes little effort and can be a fun family activity to allow the entire household to share in the experience of growing their own food.

The bed of the garden should consist of a pliable material to allow for root growth and water permeability. Most people use mesh or other types of fabric that permits the plants to grow and establish a root system, but prevents weeds from making their way into the garden’s bed. The material should be pinned solidly to the ground to prevent it from moving as the soil is put in the bed and the plants are placed in the soil.

The bed’s walls can be built from sturdy lumber. In fact, most people use 4 foot long boards to build their garden’s sides. These boards can be bought at any home improvement store or lumber yard. They should be placed above the bedding material and the ends of the boards should be secured together to make a box.

Once the bed has been constructed, the garden can be filled with soil. Most garden stores and home improvement centers sell rich, nutrient-filled bedding soil that encourages the growth of all sorts of plants. Once the soil is in place, people can plant their garden and begin growing crops.

You’ve planted a garden only to have it destroyed by grazing deer. Here are some tips to help you keep the deer away.

Deer hate dogs because dogs have big teeth and make lots of noise which frightens all but the bravest deer. With a little effort, you can train your dog to guard your garden. The dog will also leave little piles around the garden which will also deter the deer. Just watch your step. If your cat likes to use your garden as a litter box, this will also deter the deer.

You could also try scare tactics. Throwing rocks, yelling, and chasing the deer out of your garden will convince the deer that you are off your meds and should be avoided. If used consistently, this usually works for a while.

Finally, deer are repulsed by the human scent and will do their best to avoid it. You could try marking your garden in much the same way that a Buck will mark his territory. There are two ways that you can do this. You can give your husband a six pack, and then send him into the garden to take a walk. Or you are afraid that the neighbors might call the police, you can simply have him urinate in a bucket and spread it around. If that doesn’t appeal to you, you could try coyote urine. It works just as well and isn’t nearly as embarrassing as being caught by the neighbors marking your territory.
