The Best Time to Plant Vegetable Gardens

Where you live and depending on the hardiness of your soil determine the best time to begin planting your vegetable garden. Hardiness zone calculators are available in books at gardening centers and on websites that can tell you what zone you live in and when to plant your crops.

Some vegetables can be planted in the cooler weather in the early spring. These include onions, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and even some types of lettuce. These vegetables are ones that can handle the frost versus the plants that have tiny leaves that would die from the frost.

The vegetables that cannot be planted when frost is a risk are tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, squash and other varieties of lettuce. Once the plants are in the ground and if you are worried about a frost, cover the plants overnight for safety and when the sun rises, take the covering back off.

Some vegetables are so tender that they require being planted indoors first and covered until they bloom into a small plant that can be transferred into the ground. If you have to begin your plants inside, you need to begin the process at least a month before you want to put them in the ground. All different types of containers can be used from homemade ones to store bought ones. The most important factor is making sure the plants are warm at all times and that you keep the soil damp while growing.
When the weather is warm enough and there is not a risk of frost, the plants should then be transferred into the soil outdoors for further growth.
